Judy Smith was born and raised in South Africa where she has had an extensive career in the medical field. She ran two sub departments in the surgical unit of a large teaching hospital, was one of three vascular technologists in the country and the was the first to bring in auto-transfusion.

In the counseling system of South Africa, Judy was a qualified crisis counselor and facilitator for the training of crisis counselors. She was also qualified as a rape crisis counselor and was considered "very" different because she didn't avoid trauma and instead used a very direct approach that allowed clients to reconnect with the incident, take a look at it from a "safe" perspective and then make a different choice about what had happened and how to handle it. She co-authored the manual for a children's training in crisis counseling in South Africa. She has extensive experience in the field of interactional motivation and personal growth.

Judy relocated to Texas in 1996, when a business opportunity brought she and her family half way around the world. Leaving her profession in the healthcare field she became a full time mom but returned to her passion for writing.

Writing under the pen name, J.M. Ashwell, she has works published in both the thriller and fantasy genres. Barnes and Noble named her their Texas author of the month in July 2006. For more information about her illustrious writing career and links to her books visit J.M. Ashwell's profile.

Her research for her fourth book led her to the field of phenomenological psychology based on the work of Bert Hellinger, a world renowned psychologist from Germany, whose work is based in part on his observations of the Zulu culture in South Africa where he was priest for several years.

Judy's own counseling background as well as a fascination with the effectiveness of this particular therapy motivated her to undergo extensive training to become a facilitator in order to deepen her understanding of the human psyche and our connections.

While continuing her busy career as an author, Judy is now enmeshed in assisting the field of phenomenological psychology to make it's way into main stream U.S. therapy, as it has in over 25 other countries. Judy is currently available for introductory as well as group sessions.
